 How to File RTI?


RTI (Right to Information) is a law that provides citizens of India the right to request information from public authorities. Here are the steps you can follow to file an RTI request:


Determine the public authority: Identify the public authority that holds the information you seek. This can be a government ministry, department, or local body.


Draft your RTI request: Write a clear and concise request for information, stating what information you require and why you need it. Your request should be addressed to the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the relevant public authority.


Pay the fee: You'll need to pay a fee to file an RTI request. As you might know, there is some amount charged for each RTI you file. Thus, to file an application to a central government department, attach application fee of Rs. 10/- in the form of Indian Postal Order.


Submit your RTI request: You can submit your RTI request in the following ways:

a. By post to the address of the public authority's PIO

b. By hand delivery to the public authority's office

c. Online, through the RTI online portal of the concerned state or central government.


Wait for a response: The public authority is required to respond to your RTI request within 30 days. If the information is not provided within this time frame, you have the right to appeal to a higher authority.


Note: It is recommended to keep a copy of your RTI request and any correspondence with the public authority for your records.
